Sunday
10th September 2006
Participants : Steve (organiser), Clinton,
Bryce, Frank, Chris, Lance, Anthony, Dean, Ken,
Henry, Theresa and Ben.
An instructional day was held at Romsey by Steve
for members to learn how to / share their knowledge of tyre changing and repair
techniques.
Steve had his vehicle jacked up when we
arrived to demonstrate how to put a tyre on without straining one’s back. He walked the tyre to the vehicle and then by
using either his foot or a tyre lever (or other suitable item) he lifted the
tyre easily into position.

The bead breaker was demonstrated
next. This item assists in the removal
of a tyre from its rim. Once the bead is
broken tyre leavers are used to remove the tyre.

Other methods were using a car jack, hi
lift jack or worst case scenario, driving over the tyre. Members were able to try different techniques
themselves and use various types of tyre levers. The variety of methods demonstrated gave
options when travelling in the bush and limited resources are available. It was also helpful for those who wanted to buy
equipment to decide what they thought best for themselves.
After lunch we viewed and tried methods of
tyre and tube repair. We were able to see what patches were available and which
tyre repair tools best suited the job. Some repairs could be done while the
tyre was on the vehicle, other methods required
popping the tyre, then repairing the hole. An informative and enjoyable day was
had by all. Thanks Steve

Thanks to Theresa for the words and
pictures.
